We are looking for a Software Manager to lead a team of software engineers building software for automated life science instruments. This role is for a leader with clarity, drive and curiosity — someone who can help people grow, make delivery more predictable, and shape how we use AI in everyday development. You may already be an experienced manager, or ready for your next leadership step; what matters most is your ability to create direction, build trust, and turn ambition into progress.
About the role
You lead a team of eight software engineers (frontend, backend and DevOps), report to the VP of R&D, and join the R&D management team. You own the software roadmap together with Product Management and hold budget responsibility for the function. The role is based in Ballerup, in the Copenhagen area.
Day to day you work closely with Product Management, System Engineering, Hardware, Bioscience, Quality and Technical Support. A lot of the work happens in the room rather than in documents: quick alignment at a desk, a shared look at test data, and a decision taken the same afternoon. That closeness is what makes our pace possible, and protecting the energy and team spirit that comes with it is part of your job.
What matters most to us
- Execution and structure. You know software development best practice and can turn priorities into a clear and structured plan the team understands and believes in.
- Leadership. You lead eight engineers with care and structure - performance conversations, motivation, team building - and you enjoy helping people grow.
- AI ambition. You want to change how a software team works with AI. Hands-on experience is welcome; genuine ambition and curiosity matter just as much.
What you'll do
You lead the software work from roadmap to release and set the tone for how the team collaborates:
- Own the software roadmap and release planning together with Product Management, balancing scientific priorities and business goals.
- Set the technical direction and the quality standards that keep our software robust and maintainable.
- Keep delivery predictable with clear scope, realistic timelines and visible progress.
- Lead the team day to day - hiring, onboarding, mentoring, feedback and career development.
- Shape how we use AI in software development, and share what works with the rest of the company.
- Manage the software budget and resources.
Your background
You do not need to match every point below, but we would like to hear from you if you bring a strong software foundation, leadership drive and the ambition to keep learning:
- Software engineering, computer science or similar background — either through education or equivalent practical experience.
- Solid software development experience - ideally with instruments, hardware-related or other complex product software.
- Experience guiding and mentoring engineers — formally or informally — and a strong ambition to grow into a broader leadership role over time.
- Curiosity about AI and modern ways of working, with the ambition to help the team improve how software is built and deployed.
- Fluent English.
About us
Since 2000 Sophion Bioscience has pioneered Automated Patch Clamping for ion channel research. Today, we specialize in automated solutions for pre-clinical life sciences.
We work closely with academic institutions, contract research organizations, and leading biotech and pharmaceutical companies to create effective assays for screening and characterization. Our solutions empower the study of drug targets and candidates at the bench, reducing development time in discovery and reducing risk in clinical trials.
Through the continued development of our Automated Patch Clamp portfolio (QPatch & Qube) and our new Organ On a Chip platform (Ethica), we offer uncompromised data quality in a user-friendly environment, from assay setup to advanced data analysis. We are headquartered in Denmark and have subsidiaries in the United States, Japan and China.
What we offer
- Real ownership, short decision paths, and visible impact across the company.
- A collaborative, international R&D environment with flexibility in how and when you work.
- Room to shape both the technology and the way the team works, including our use of AI.
- Close interaction with colleagues across R&D - scientists, hardware engineers, product managers - and an informal tone where people help each other out.
- The energy of a scaleup: fast decisions, visible results, and a product portfolio that is still taking shape.
- A team that enjoys working together, celebrates releases, and takes team spirit seriously.
We are committed to an inclusive workplace and welcome applicants of all genders and backgrounds. If you are unsure whether you tick every box, please apply anyway - we would rather have the conversation.
